We Day Volunteer FAQs

1
How old do I have to be to volunteer?

In order to ensure the health and safety of all of our volunteers, we are only able to accept individuals aged 16 or older. Volunteers must be 16 by the date of the We Day they are attending.

2
Can I volunteer if I can’t be there the entire day?

In order to put on a successful event, it is important that our volunteers commit to the volunteering times that We Day requires. This includes both orientation, and event–day execution. If you are unable to fulfill these time commitments, we encourage you to find other ways to get involved with Free The Children and Me to We.

3
Can I volunteer backstage?

Although we do try to provide our volunteers with a variety of opportunities, we are not able to offer backstage volunteer positions.

4
Can I change teams once I’ve registered?

It is important that you register for the team you want to volunteer with for We Day. Because we work with so many volunteers, we are unable to accommodate any change requests unless a specific issue has arisen.

5
Can I volunteer with a friend?

We encourage you and your friends to volunteer together for We Day! The best way to do so is for you and your friend to both register in the same city, for the same team.

6
I registered a couple of months ago and haven’t heard anything – what should I do?

Check your junk mail folder to see if you’ve received anything from us. If not, please contact volunteers@freethechildren.com.

7
I signed up to volunteer but can no longer come – what should I do?

Please contact volunteers@freethechildren.com. Please include your name, city, and what team you registered for in your email.

8
Will meals be provided?

Yes, all of our volunteers will be fed on the evening of training and on the event day. On event day, volunteers receive a breakfast and lunch plus snacks. Your lunch time will be assigned by your Team Lead. We provide vegetarian options but cannot guarantee vegan or gluten-free options. If you have specific dietary needs please bring additional food.

9
Will I get to watch the show?

We cannot guarantee that volunteers will be able to see the show. When possible, we try to give this opportunity to our volunteers, but we are looking first and foremost for individuals who are committed to helping us put on a great event for the sake of all the students in the audience!

10
What should I bring?

Please bring:

  • Comfortable, close-toed shoes
11
Where do I find a schedule for my team?

Your team schedule will be included in your Team Manual. All team manuals will be posted on the We Day Volunteer Corner at the end of the summer.

12
What should I wear?

Please be sure to wear comfortable shoes and comfortable clothing. It will be a long day and your comfort should be a top priority. Some teams will have more specific dress requirements. Your Team Leads will provide you with further direction during training.

13
Will there be a place for me to store my things? Will they be safe?

Yes, there will be a guarded area for volunteers to keep their belongings. On the evening of training the Team Leads will indicate where this area is, but we recommend that you leave valuables at home or carry them on your person on event day. We recommend that you also carry anything you will need access to during the day. We cannot be responsible for any lost or stolen items.

14
Will I receive a reference letter for number of hours volunteered?

We are happy to provide documentation to our volunteers! Please ensure that, when you register, you check the box asking if you require a letter.

15
Will I receive training as a volunteer?

Yes, all of our volunteers will receive training from a Free The Children or Me to We staff member. Training dates and times are listed as part of the registration process.

16
When does training take place?

Training dates are listed under each team description in the volunteer registration process. You can find up-to-date training information on the We Day Volunteer Corner.

17
Can I volunteer if I can’t make the training?

In order to put on a successful event, it is important that our volunteers commit to the volunteering times that We Day requires. This includes all training times. If you are unable to attend training, we encourage you to find other ways to get involved with Free The Children and Me to We.

18
What time should I arrive?

Generally, volunteers will be asked to arrive at around 7:00AM. Once you register for a specific team, we will send you the exact times at which you should arrive.

19
What will my day look like?

Upon event arrival first thing in the morning, volunteers have an opportunity to safely stow personal items away and have breakfast. Volunteers then move to their assigned spaces for the duration of the day, with breaks and lunch provided. Volunteers are asked to stay after the event to support the tear-down process in their respective spaces.

20
What if I can’t find my team/get lost?

In every venue, there is a space dedicated to volunteers. Should you get lost, you can ask any staff member for directions to this space.
