General Questions

1
What is We Day?

Youth coming together to lead global change is the movement of our time. We Day is the manifestation of that movement for a generation of youth.

We Day follows in the tradition of the world’s most important social movements—from small sit-ins to massive rallies and marches that brought together impassioned people set on changing the world.

We Day brings forth the spirit of these movements to a generation of youth. Harnessing the energy and passion of this young community of change-makers, We Day brings youth together in an unparalleled setting to show them that they are not alone in their journey to make a difference.

Within stadiums full of cheering young people, We Day brings some of the greatest social issues of today to the forefront, and—no matter the cause, no matter the issue-provides ways in which every young person can find their place within the movement to create global change. The end to apathy is realized as young people discover that they are all part of this movement.

2

4
Why does Free The Children put on We Day?

Free The Children believes in a world in which all young people are free to achieve their fullest potential as agents of change. We are a charity and educational partner that empowers youth to remove the barriers preventing them from being active local and global citizens.

We Day is a way for young people to come together and celebrate their power to change the world, learn about new issues and gain the motivation to take action. It creates a community of young activists who know they are not alone in their journey to make a difference.

WE SCHOOLS IN ACTION PROGRAM

1
What is the We Schools in Action Program?

Free The Children’s We Schools in Action program inspires a generation to care about social justice and provides the practical tools needed to turn that inspiration into action. We Schools in Action puts students at the forefront of active global citizenship by educating them on social issues and action planning, developing leadership skills and engaging them in world-changing action.

Participants commit to completing one local action and one global action as well as sharing their action plans and accomplishments with the community of We schools. Through their activities and with the support of Free The Children, students are given the opportunity to participate in student-led campaigns, explore and develop their capacity for leadership and to engage with the world in new ways. In turn, their efforts provide tangible benefits for local communities and around the world.

Participation in the We Schools in Action program is not mandatory to attend We Day. However, schools that make the commitment to take action through the program will get first priority to attend the event.

The program unfolds throughout the year in five steps:

  • Commit: Application
  • Get inspired: Attend or watch We Day
  • Get educated: Attend an in-service or professional development session and receive classroom materials
  • Take action: Schools take one local and one global action
  • Share it: Submission of Reports 1 and 2, detailing action plans and successes

2
Does our school have to commit to this program in order to attend We Day?

Participation in the We Schools in Action program is strongly encouraged, but not mandatory. If you choose not to participate in the full program, we invite you to apply for tickets to We Day. However, schools that do commit to the full program will receive priority for We Day tickets.

3
Our school is unable to attend We Day but would like to participate in the We Schools in Action program. Can we still register?

Absolutely! The We Schools in Action program is a year-long program of action. We Schools commit to completing one local action and one global action as well as sharing their action plans and accomplishments with us by filling out two online reports during the year. As a We School, you will have access to all of Free The Children’s online educational resources. Once you register for the We Schools program, we will connect you directly with one of our team’s amazing Educator Programming Coordinators (EPC)! He/she will be there to provide you with support and guidance as you plan and take action throughout the year.

Over the course of the year, all schools have the opportunity to participate in Free The Children campaigns, and take action in their communities. Check here for campaign updates and how to get involved!

TICKETS & LOGISTICS

1
Where can I find information about the times of the event, parking, transportation, etc?
All logistical information about each We Day event can be found online in the logistics package. Go to www.weday.com, select the city you will be attending, and scroll down to the section containing the logistics package. If you have registered for tickets, logistical information will be emailed to you approximately one month before the event.

2
How can I get tickets for We Day?

3
Does it cost money to attend We Day/Can I purchase a ticket to We Day?

We Day is a free event, therefore tickets cannot be purchased. You can register for We Day as part of a school or community/youth group online at www.freethechildren.com/weday. Your school/group is responsible for covering all related costs, which may include supply teacher costs, transportation and accommodation, if necessary.

4
Who can come to We Day? Is there an age restriction?

We Day is Free The Children’s signature youth empowerment event, which inspires and motivates youth to take action on social justice issues they are passionate about. All participants at a We Day event are Grade 7 or older (age 12+), and must come as part of a school group or community/youth group. Due to the mature subject content of some speeches at We Day, we are only able to offer tickets to youth Grade 7 and above.

Free The Children’s We Schools in Action program inspires a generation to care about social justice and provides the practical tools needed to turn that inspiration into action.Launched by the energy of We Day, We Schools puts students at the forefront of active global citizenship by educating them on social issues and action planning, developing leadership skills, and engaging them in world-changing action.

12
Do we have to make a commitment to the program in order to attend We Day?

Participation in the program is strongly encouraged but not mandatory. If you choose not to participate in the full program, we invite you to still apply for tickets to We Day, though schools that do commit to the full program will receive priority for We Day tickets.

You can learn more about these points in our We Day Ticket and Event Policies document found at www.freethechildren.com/weschools.

13
What is the ticketing structure and why was it created?

To encourage and reward fulfillment of the program elements, most notably taking action and reporting back, we will be informing participating schools about a new incentive structure. Schools who complete Reports 1 and 2 and who take local and global action will be eligible for the full 15 tickets in the following year. Schools who do not complete these elements will only be eligible for 10 tickets.

In the current year, we are looking only at Report 2 (not Report 1) and their record of action in order to determine their eligibility. This will be communicated to schools at every stage so that they are well aware and can take action accordingly.

Through this change, we hope to see even greater rates of program completion and, in turn, greater impacts for communities locally and globally and in the schools themselves. We will also be better able to share the impacts of the program with our partners and stakeholders, as well as with the community of schools participating in the program.

16
We haven’t received our school’s tickets yet. Can you tell us when they will arrive?

If you confirmed your school’s tickets on time, you will either receive your tickets directly by mail or via your school board/division’s internal mailing system. If you do not receive your tickets three days prior to the event, please e-mail the We Schools team at weschools@freethechildren.com or call 416-925-5894 ext 294. If you confirmed your school’s tickets late, you may be asked to pick them up on the morning of the event.

17
We received our school/group’s tickets in the mail, but we did not receive the correct number of tickets. What should we do?

If, for some reason, you received fewer tickets than you indicated on your confirmation form, we will make sure that we provide you with the correct number. Please contact the We Schools team at weschools@freethechildren.com to find out how to access these tickets.

18
Can I get extra tickets to the event?

We understand that schools/groups would like to bring as many students to We Day as possible. Please e-mail weschools@freethechildren.com or call 416-9255894 ext 294 to see if extra tickets are available. We will put you on a waitlist and let you know if tickets become available.

19
I APPLIED FOR WE DAY ONLINE IN THE SPRING, BUT I’M NOT SURE IF MY APPLICATION WAS RECEIVED. HOW CAN I MAKE SURE IT GOT THROUGH?

When you registered for We Day, you should have received an e-mail confirming that we received your application. If you did not receive this e-mail, please contact the We Schools team at weschools@freethechildren.com.

20
Are educators/supervisors included in the ticket number?

Yes. The number of tickets you applied for is the total number of tickets your school/group will receive, including educators/supervisors who are also planning to attend the event. Therefore, if you applied for 15 tickets and would like 2 educators to attend, you may bring 13 students.

21
How many educators/supervisors per group should come to We Day?

As We Day is a youth-focused event, we try to ensure that as many youth as possible are given the opportunity to attend. We recommend a ratio of one educator/supervisor for every 15 students.

22
One of my students is in a wheelchair, are they still able to come? If so, will they still be able to sit with our school? Do they need someone to accompany them?

Yes. We have a designated area for accessible seating, so we can definitely accommodate anyone in a wheelchair. Depending on the venue, we cannot guarantee that your school/group will be able to sit with this person, as the accessibility section is not always close to the other sections. However, we will do our best to seat your school close to the accessibility section. Please note that if the person requiring accessible seating is a student, they must be accompanied by an adult; therefore you will need a minimum of two adults/educators with your group.

23
Our school didn’t manage to register for We Day on time. Can we still get tickets to the event?

Groups are always welcome to register, However, they are not guaranteed tickets once the registration period has ended. Please contact the We Schools team at weschools@freethechildren.com to find out if we have space for your group to attend.

24
I’m a student and my school isn’t going to We Day. Can I still come?

Since We Day is part of the We Schools in Action program, all We Day participants must attend with their school or community/youth group in order to fulfill the requirements of the program. As such, we are unable to provide individuals with tickets to the event. We suggest contacting your school’s principal to discuss registering your school for next year’s We Day and then connecting with our We Schools team at weschools@freethechildren.com.
