FAQs

1
What is We Day?

Free The Children’s We Day is more than just one day of celebration and inspiration. We Day is the movement of our time – a movement of young people leading local and global change.

Created by Free The Children to celebrate the power of young people to create positive change, We Day is a day-long event that ignites a year-long educational program for change, called We Schools in Action.

Young people from across North America come together to celebrate the positive actions they are taking and to launch a movement of youth working for social change. Through messages from world-renowned celebrities, speakers and musicians, young people not only learn about a diverse range of current issues, they gain the inspiration and knowledge needed to act.

We Day events are completely free of charge to students and educators.  To gain access, each student must commit to take the knowledge and inspiration of We Day and turn it into tangible local and global actions.

Why do you do We Day?

Free The Children believes in a world where all young people are free to achieve their fullest potential as agents of change. We are a charity and educational partner that empowers youth to remove barriers that prevent them from being active local and global citizens.

We Day is a way for young people to come together and celebrate their power to change the world, learn about new issues, and gain the motivation to take action. It creates a community of young activists who know they are not alone in their journey to make a difference.

What is the We Schools in Action program?

Free The Children’s We Schools in Action program inspires a generation to care about social justice and provides the practical tools needed to turn that inspiration into action.Launched by the energy of We Day, We Schools puts students at the forefront of active global citizenship by educating them on social issues and action planning, developing leadership skills, and engaging them in world-changing action.

We Schools commit to taking one local action and one global action, and to sharing their action plans and accomplishments with the community of We schools. Through their activities, and with the support of Free The Children, students are given the opportunity to participate in student-led campaigns, explore and develop their capacity for leadership, and to engage with the world in new ways. In turn, their efforts provide tangible benefits for local communities and around the world. Participation in the We Schools in Action program is not mandatory to attend We Day. However, schools that make the commitment to take action through the program will get first priority to attend the event.

The program unfolds throughout the year in five steps:

  1. Commit: Application
  2. Get inspired: Attend or watch We Day
  3. Get educated: Attend an in-service and receive classroom materials
  4. Take action: Schools embark on one local and one global action
  5. Share it: Submission of reports 1 and 2, detailing action plans and successes
19
Do we have to make a commitment to the program in order to attend We Day?

Participation in the program is strongly encouraged but not mandatory. If you choose not to participate in the full program, we invite you to still apply for tickets to We Day, though schools that do commit to the full program will receive priority for We Day tickets.

You can learn more about these points in our We Day Ticket and Event Policies document found at www.freethechildren.com/weschools.

20
What is the ticketing structure and why was it created?

To encourage and reward fulfillment of the program elements, most notably taking action and reporting back, we will be informing participating schools about a new incentive structure. Schools who complete Reports 1 and 2 and who take local and global action will be eligible for the full 15 tickets in the following year. Schools who do not complete these elements will only be eligible for 10 tickets.

In the current year, we are looking only at Report 2 (not Report 1) and their record of action in order to determine their eligibility. This will be communicated to schools at every stage so that they are well aware and can take action accordingly.

Through this change, we hope to see even greater rates of program completion and, in turn, greater impacts for communities locally and globally and in the schools themselves. We will also be better able to share the impacts of the program with our partners and stakeholders, as well as with the community of schools participating in the program.
